Flipping through my study bible, I came across a wonderful devotion from Proverbs 22:6, "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."

"No parent, regardless of dedication or skill, can control a child's every move. All individuals are given freedom by God to make choices about how they use their will. Even if a parent could control a child's behavior, they could not determine the hidden thoughts. Still parents are given a mandate to exert strong positive influence over their children. The word train includes a Hebrew connotation of "dedicate." Parents are to throw themselves wholeheartedly into the task of raising their children. Parents can't fix or control everything and every situation involving their children. But the general principle holds true: parents are responsible to shape their children's wills and to direct their children in God's ways so they will know the truth and be equipped to make wise choices throughout life."

My Sweet Spot

I use to think there was something wrong with me because I like things organized, neat and in its proper place. I heard all the names that were associated with this and assumed it was bad. After attending a ladies retreat focused on our sweet spots, I learned that being organized and neat was a gift. It was part of God's work in me!

Starting school this fall is going to be a challenge since I will also be working full time while taking care of my beautiful, sweet treasures. I'm honestly looking forward to these new challenges because I get to organize something! Sounds weird I know, but I just can't help myself.

The very first thing on my list was to create new adventures within bible lessons. I never want anything to interfere with my deep desire to teach and train my children. As seasons change, I look forward to curious questions and answers we discover in our quiet time together.

This will be the first year I spend more one on one time. Since my daughter is discovering boys and my son is discovering girls, it's much better to use my time wisely and separately. This subject will require some major detail along with so many other subjects I can't wait to touch on!

I came up with the idea to organize all my teaching tools in separate bins because it helps me stay focused. And my brain can't function without some type of foreseen organization! If I know what I got, I can use it.

I can't begin to tell you how excited I am to begin parenting, work, and education all full time at the same time. It brings joy to my heart knowing that God has planned a new adventure for the three of us. And what excites me even more, is the prize that's waiting in the end.

A Servant's Heart

I'm always looking for another creative way to teach something to my children. That's just me, the way I'm made. I love parenting and I love creativity, so why not put them together!

It brings me to a boiling point when I see my children begin to aggravate one another, especially when they find joy in the matter. I decided to correct the issue by turning their provoking hearts into serving hearts.

For a start, I gathered craft sticks and wrote several different ways they could serve one another around the house while giving myself the opportunity to add more at anytime....

*clear his/her dinner plate
*vacuum his/her room
*make his/her bed
*offer front seat in car
*offer brother/sister to choose TV show
*help brother/sister clean a mess
*make his/her bed

When I catch them in the act of stirring up strife, that is when the stick is pulled. I don't want them to abuse the correction on each other. If it can't be put to use, they pull one until it can!! That is why I tried my best to choose areas that could be served daily.

I truly believe my children should serve one another without it becoming a correction, but giving a little reminder to find joy in serving rather than aggravating is just an added bonus!

As Hanna spends time writing love letters to her husband to give on their wedding day, she also came up with her recent list to start praying over her husband. I can't wait to see how much it changes over the years as she grows more and more into a Godly young lady. I need to find a really nice box to place all the prayer lists and letters that her spouse will some day receive.

I think it is a wonderful idea to spend years before her wedding day to pray, write and wait for the man she is trusting God to send to her. She will definitely have him covered before he even knows!

Mother's Day 2011

My Wednesday night bible study will resume in August. I thought I would share a few highlights from my notes this past year that have spoken to me on more than one occasion!

*Put God at the throne of your life.
*When we give grace in forgiveness we receive freedom and restoration.
*If you remain faithful, God will raise you up in due time.
*Our value is who we our in Christ and not based on what others think of us.
*God always provides a way out.
*Sanctified weakness is allowing God to turn our weakness into a ministry.
*Fruit is not produced when it is blocked off.
*Rules without relationship breeds rebellion (one of my favorites).

A False Copy

I was thinking today about a Secret Keeper Girl conference my daughter and I attended several months ago. We are such big fans and I love their message to young women in today's world. Teaching Hanna to pursue purity, embrace her unique qualities, and enjoy the gifts of a modest heart plays a huge role in my day to day parenting.

I have such a passion for Hanna to love herself in the unique way God created her to be. Something I focused little on as I grew into a young lady myself. My favorite part of the conference was learning to ignore "labels"....things that lead us to feel horrible about our own character, our outward appearance or anything about ourselves for that matter.

At the conference, they demonstrated the best example of a label...with labels attached to her garment, she slowly tore the world's view to reveal God's view. It was one of the most beautiful portrayals of God's love for me because it hit the inner, most haunted part of my life.

I've heard the word ugly spoke more times than I've heard I love you by a spouse. My image in a mirror reflected unaccepted features and caused years of secret depression. Name calling and daily criticism added to little confidence and misdirected beauty. It seemed that physical beauty was the key to happiness in my life, but I received a false copy.

As private as I can get, I went from insecurities as a teenager to insecurities as a wife. The one reflection I thought would lift me up, tore me down. Stepping away from labels today is a tremendous breakthrough. I refuse to let a label tear me apart for one more second of my life!

I pray that my daughter will never feel anything less than God, her loving Father thinks of her. I could spend a lifetime of wishes and regrets of my past, but I look to them as a tool to prepare my daughter for what's ahead. Leading by example, speaking truth of my past, and sharing the word's of her Heavenly Father are some of the best parenting tools I can provide.

There is nothing ugly, disgusting or too damaged for God. There is nothing or no one on this earth that can take away the very best God has to offer. There is nothing or no one that can label me anything less than the most of what God thinks of me! The days that I am able to cultivate the very best of God to my daughter, is the fire that blazes inside my heart before she sets out to extinguish a cruel and hateful world.

There is nothing in a label than what we choose to make of it. The world sees the label, but underneath is the truth, so choose nothing less that what God thinks of you!

Operation Word Camp

Scripture is the one place I turn when I'm in need of help, rather it's with my children or myself. For years, I have collected scripture to help guide me through parenting. I usually pull it out as a teaching tool right before I meet with my children. I never throw God at my children, but instead, do my best to remind them of His promises, commands, direction, and love.

Each Sunday, I am going to give the three of us a new scripture to meditate on throughout our week. I thought the best place to start are the areas we are struggling with. We've decided to repeat our scriptures each morning and evening. Holding each other accountable will be an added bonus!

This week at our Operation Word Camp, I will be focusing on my stress level through my divorce not effecting my attitude at home, Hanna will be learning to accept instruction/correction and poor Richie will be learning to stop whining/complaining!

Maybe this idea can also help you fight off a little growing steam and get to the heart of the issue!

An Attribute A Day

If you list the attributes of God throughout the bible, you will discover the most amazing qualities. I began my unfinished project in 2003 in the book of Psalms. I only made it through the first 25 chapters and looking over the attributes today, is an encouragement way beyond the words written within my notebook.

I want to pick up from the very beginning, but this time, share the venture with my children. I purchased 2 extra notebooks and look forward to the time we will spend jotting down an attribute or two each day. This will be the beginning of a well written list to recall in the years to come. I look forward watching my children grow as they discover many new qualities of their loving and faithful father.

No Amputations Required

On Monday evenings I attend a woman's bible group. We are studying the book of Esther through a Beth Moore series. The subtitle is called, It's Tough Being A Woman. My goal is to come out of this study encouraged in the areas of my life I feel insecure.

Since I have been separated from my husband, I have felt at times insecure of what others might "think" of me. I have questioned if a Godly man will eventually find a divorced 36 year old woman with two children appealing. I question judgments of others, worry about the gossip, the looks, pray other women do not think I am after their men and most of all, I think about how this path is going to effect my future.

In tonight's lesson, I was amazed out how well the first two chapters of Esther related to me. Beth gave a wonderful sermon about our past history and our future destiny....

"You cannot amputate your history from your destiny. You are not going to become who God has made you without your history."

I know in my heart that God is up to something within me. I am going to become the woman he created me to be! But why all the insecurity? Because I compare myself too much to others. My past is part of my future. Through this divorce, I am going to become complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10).

It's definitely tough being a woman, especially an insecure one. But "the things we think we are not, are the very things he chooses" ~Beth Moore.

One Way or The Other

Studying Genesis this year has been a wonderful experience! I never knew I could apply so much from the Old Testament to my present day life. During our discussion Wednesday night, I learned a fascinating concept....

We can either live in the works of the flesh (jealousy, envy, pride, disrespect, hatred, anger, etc.) or choose to inwardly live in the fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control). When we abide in Jesus, life goes from the inside out. Our mission is to focus on the fruit of our spirit and not works of our flesh! It's one way or the other!!

It's easy for me to live in the flesh, but to stand firm in the spirit can be more difficult. The question was asked, "what is in your life that is competing with what God wants to do in and through you?" That was a big question!

"The Spirit gives life, the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life." ~John 6:63

Mirror Image

I love to leave scriptures on our bathroom mirrors with expo markers! It is one of my favorite things to do around the house. Knowing Hanna and Richie will read them daily, motivates me to keep it a part of my regular habits of ministry to my children.

This week around the house I want to center on self-control. Just with all that is happening in my life as an adult, I probably need it the most. I sometimes give full vent to my anger and it has nothing to do with being a redhead, but everything to do with foolishness!

Proverbs 29:11 says it so perfectly, "A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.

This will make for a great mirror image all week!

Battlefield

I've been told to pick my battles with my children, but I think most battles matter with parenting because it builds Godly character. Even the small things have teachable moments. Being a mother carries all sorts! There are times my children should solve their own problems, but hopefully it will be the effect of taking time to "train up a child in the way they should go."

One thing I have learned as a parent is confessing my own mistakes to my children. There are times my mood reflects my parenting. I may raise my voice and become impatient, but raising my voice only causes short term obedience out of fear. When I lose self-control, my children deserve the truth. Seeking forgiveness from my children shows I am not perfect and I desire to go and make things right.

Everything matters in my battles. I have the will to choose right from wrong just as my children do, but when I let things go, our foundations weaken and eventually break. What I say, how I say it, and when I say it matters in everything. Some battles end in just a few short sentences, others take several years to accomplish, but how I choose to participate in the battle builds my army while they live at home.

Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it.

Who's Voice Do You Hear

For the past two weeks, my Wednesday bible study has been on vacation and I missed the last two Sundays in Church. I was so glad to finally get back to God. And as usual, it was perfect!

I've been praying about different things, people, areas, and relationships. I usually try really hard to listen to my gift of discernment, but sometimes I think I purposely avoid it without actually admitting it. I guess it's my flesh taking over or the worldly desires that tempt us at times. Even though I still pray for something I really want or want to do, does not mean God is going to change His mind, especially if you are praying for His will over your life. It sort of reminds me of my kids asking over and over for something and telling them, "every time you ask, the answer is STILL going to be no!"

We have been studying Genesis since September. I have enjoyed this study so much and NEVER thought the Old Testament could relate to me, especially the stories in Genesis, but boy does our Pastor preach it home!

Last night was about listening to God's voice and being patient. Just what I needed to hear, me, Ms Patient Be Not. Sometimes we like to put an AND or BUT in situations because it's our human solution. Now, I will be the first to admit that lately I have used "and" or "but" about a million times trying to justify my human solution. Good Golly!

The second life lesson I learned was this...When God does not supply all the details, it is an invitation to TRUST Him. I have deeply addressed an impatient heart. Impatients can cause an unfulfilled desire, a mistaken thought, or a worldly suggestion. That makes it easy to act without waiting for God first.

For the first time in my life, I have faced some pretty big giants. I don't want to listen to MY voice, I want to listen to GOD's voice. I have an opportunity to put God first and patiently wait for Him.

And the last lesson..."Helping" God out is usually motivated, not by wanting to see God glorified, but to see ourselves satisfied!

He is the only one who sees.

Ms Fix A Lot

Since the kids and I have been in our new home, we are having such a wonderful time enjoying all our many blessings.

I am having to remember to check the mail, pay bills, put trash out on Thursdays, and lock the doors. I have also fixed a drawer, put together two end tables, and a small television stand. I filled my break fluid, used a drill, a screwdriver, and a hammer all in one day. I even rigged my Internet and cable wire to one outlet (and Mr. Smarty Pants in electronics said it wouldn't work, ha).

Oh wait...I even killed a garden snake. And no Richie, my sweet son, we will not keep it as a pet!

Inner Beauty

Hanna and I recently attended a Secret Keeper Girl conference about true beauty and modesty. As a young lady, I wasted so much time comparing myself to others. I worried about my outward appearance too often. I don't want my daughter to struggle with these types of labels because the world gives us so many mixed messages. I want her to feel beautiful because she is uniquely made by God, His beautiful princess.

Hanna and I committed to each other that we would spend more time with God and less time in front of the mirror, a Secret Keeper Girl motto. I love this metaphor! Our true beauty from a Godly heart is the best cover of a magazine!

When you let something go, don't keep a grudge. I have been rude and ignorant. I let anger go, but I used the silent treatment to replace it. What good does that do? I may be silent, but I sure am guilty. Such a humbling experience.

The Secret Connection

Here is one fun way to stay connected to your children. This idea was past along to me and the kids and I came up with our own way of extending the idea that we just can't seem to stop!

Purchase a journal the two of you keep together. Start the first page by listing the rules. The kids and I set 2 rules...you can ask anything and everything is kept a secret. They ask a question, I come back and answer it. I ask a question, they come back and answer it. Before you know it, you have months and even years of journals the 2 of you have shared. Believe me, there are ALL types of curious questions!

My favorite thing about the journals is not not having a particular time you write in them. The two of you just keep checking it periodically, writing back and forth. Each one of my kids found a special place to keep their journals (which is funny they are not hidden). If I happen to walk past their room, while they are out playing, I simply check it, read it, answer and ask. And they do the same when I'm not looking.

I think you will find this to be a cool connection with your kids to add to all the others you have. And the most fascinating thing is the years of growth you will find in your children when you look back on all the years you wrote together.

Manner Magic

I started posting manner cards on the kitchen table once a week as a reminder to the kids to keep up the practice. Things like.....knock before you enter a room, do not interrupt adults while talking, wash your hands before dinner, and so on. This week they are to "say hello and smile when greeting our guests." We also get a chance to talk about it at dinner.

I like focusing on all areas, not just table manners!!

7 Days A Week

To make bible reading fun, purchase a weekly medicine box. In each slot, place a short scripture. During your devotion time with your children, have them open the day of the week and read the scripture. This makes a great family devotion while sharing the word of God with your children!

I found the boxes at the Dollar General. Its work sitting down each week and replacing new scriptures, so save the old ones to use again!

Depending on the age of your children, you can also just add the verses. During their quiet time, they can look up scriptures each day. This might also be a good opportunity for them to start a journal and relate scripture to their lives.

Here are a few that I have used in the past~

James 1:19-20
Father, help us to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. Remind us that our anger does not bring about the righteous life you desire.

Colossians 3:8-9
Lord, guide us to rid ourselves of any anger, rage malice, slander or any language that does not lift each other up.

Daily Devotions for Kids

I was looking for a daily email devotion for my daughter now that she has her own email address. I came across a site I thought looked interesting. I signed up to receive the emails for a few weeks to see what they are like before I add her to the list. Looking through some of their archives, they seem pretty good and pretty easy for her to understand. I want to start seeing her study God's word on her own some and I thought this would be a great way to start. (It also makes great forwards to her friends)!

Manners Matter

It is important to me to teach my children manners! This week we are discovering Psalms 19:4 "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight O Lord." Saying things like yes mam, please, thank you, your welcome, may I and excuse me are words I pray they keep in their vocabulary. Being aware of how they speak is definitely a lesson in manners.

The Bladeless Lawn Mower

This past school year my son's teacher shared a very convicting story with me over our lunch break that I will never forget. She had a neighbor years ago that mowed his lawn every day! This struck her as odd, so after a period of time, she convinced a mutual neighborhood friend to casually ask the reasoning behind his unusual behavior. A few days later, their mutual friend reports back. The sweet, patient man across the street mowed his lawn everyday to avoid his wife....the blade was rarely down! I was convicted straight up!

How often do I whine and complain to my husband? Way too much. I came across a super awesome article while reading Moms of Faith newsletter that went hand in hand with this story. It reminded me that my mouth does major damage when I don't keep it shut. And honestly, it runs and runs and runs!

Years ago in our church youth, a very special friend came up with a great idea to make personal mailboxes for each child. We used white lunch sacks that each child personally decorated! I loved this idea so much, I used it with my kids at home. I hung the sacks outside their bedroom doors and leave encouraging notes weekly (or sometimes small gifts). There's always something special when a child receives good news!

One of my favorite authors is Ginger Plowman. I have read 2 of her books and fell in love with Don't Make Me Count To Three. This book centers around heart oriented discipline. I would love to tell you more, but you have got to read it and see for yourself!

If you are interested in reading her book and decide you love it just as much as I did, she offers a little cheat sheet called Wise Words for Moms. It is AWESOME! This is one method I have adopted in full confidence.

Take Notes

Begin a journal for each family member today! I love to write little things my children and husband have experienced, said or done. I even add prayers, hopes, desires and dreams. Nothing is left out! I take about 20 minutes to write in all 3 journals, sometimes longer, but it is well worth a cramping hand. Journal entries make great bedtime stories!

Looking Up Scripture

Take a small container of any kind and place easy to read scripture passages on small pieces of card stock. Pick one night of the week that you sit down together, take turns drawing from the container, look them up and apply them to your lives! This is a great way to teach your children how to find scripture.

Scripture Memory Books

The kids and I have put together little scripture books. I typed up a bunch of scriptures I felt would be fun for them to memorize in big bold letters. After hole punching everything, I held the book together with little gold brads (so we are able to add at anytime). Once the kids memorize a scripture, they get to pick out something from this fabulous bakery in Cedarville!

10 Commandments

I wanted my kids to learn the 10 commandments or at least be familiar with what they mean. I found some road signs on a program that I could write each commandment separately. I pasted the printed copies on a cut 5x7 piece of card stock. They are not the most adorable flashcards in the world, honestly a little cheesy, but they do the trick! I bring them out every now and then before we sit down to read a book at bedtime. They usually take turns telling what each commandment means with a little guidance from mom. The kids truly love them and so do I!

Shine Like Stars

For my birthday last year, my mother gave me a little glass dish filled with little notes of encouragement on tiny folded cards. Before we head out the door, we stop and read a quote. "God smiles when he thinks of you...God loves you just the way you are...You were created for an amazing purpose...You are forgiven!"

Grab a dish, bowl, jar or cup and put together your own encouraging notes. Soon you will find they are sharing with neighborhood friends and evening guests. What a great way to minister!

Season Them With Salt

I started collecting specific scriptures from various parenting books so I can remind my children God's word in their attitudes, choices, and struggles. I bought index cards and placed them in a recipe box under certain categories~accepting correction, anger, arguing, idols, boasting, kindness, complaining, bad language, back talk, attitude, obedience, laziness, whining, and encouragement (Creative Correction by Lisa Whechel is an excellent resource).

I use the cards during my private time with God. I try to meditate on the scriptures so I am able to teach and train my children according to God's word.

The Royal Princess

The Princess and the Kiss by Jennie Bishop is by far my most favorite book ever written for children. This is a beautiful story of a young princess saving her kiss for her prince. In the story, the parents present their daughter with a kiss to keep or give away, but she is to use wisdom in saving the kiss for her prince by not parting with it for the sake of a stranger.

I created a kiss of my own to present to my daughter Hanna as I sat down to read her the story for the first time. It was a very spiritual moment for the both of us. A Life Lesson devotional is also available. Jennie Bishops has written Squire and the Scroll for boys and The Garden Wall for courting youth. During the week, the kids and I sit down and read a bible story. After we read the story, the kids color the story in a spiral notebook. I always write the date and lesson at the top of the page (I titled the notebooks "Bible Stories by..."). This will bring many memories throughout the years!

For my daughter, I chose Ps 18:1-3 and for my son, something similar, Ps 62:5-7. I placed the scriptures in each of their rooms as a reminder of God's promise over their lives!

On A Positive Note

Pick up some fun post-it of different sizes. Post scripture around the house for your kids to see at all times. Bathroom mirrors, bedroom dressers, and doors are always a great place to start. I like posting Samuel 16:7 on our bathroom mirrors!

Hide little notes in their room where finding them may take a little time. I like leaving them in socks, pillow cases, notebooks, pockets or lunchboxes. I even place them around for my husband to find! Whenever I have an evening away from my children, I leave a little note on their pillow. Usually when I return home there is one on mine!

Snack Tickets

When my son was 4 years old, I realized if I did not come up with something, he was going to eat all day long. I came up with the "snack ticket" method which has become a very structured, peaceful, independent, self-controlled life saver. I have used this system for years and it's been a huge hit during summer and weekends (or any other time my children are home and not in school).

I cut card size tickets out of construction paper and placed them in envelope pockets I found at a teacher supply store (sealing a letter size envelope and cutting in half will also serve the same purpose). I placed them on the refrigerator by sticking a magnet to the back. I gave them each 3 tickets with separate colors. When they get a snack, they remove a ticket.

I did make a few rules...they are not allowed to eat junk food or right before a meal, and they can't use the ticket in place of a meal. I stock up on fruits, veggies, cheese sticks, cheese crackers, pretzels, yogurt, salsa, pudding cups, peanut butter, popcorn, granola bars, cheese squares, and pepperoni slices.

I placed a list on the frig of items that they may choice from. I have no problem with them choosing 2 items at a time - one big, one small. During the school week, we limit snacks to just one.
